Most of us go through our whole lives without ever having a plane land in our backyard. The folks near the Covey Trails Airstrip outside Fulshear, Texas can no longer say that. On a recent morning, a small aircraft came down on top of a house in the area, and by the time emergency crews arrived, the scene looked like something out of a movie you’d catch on a Sunday afternoon rerun.
The aircraft, described as a yellow single engine plane (reportedly a Piper J3C-65) ended up wedged against the home with a tire perched on the roof and a wing resting on the ground. It is the kind of image that stops you mid scroll, half disaster and half backyard sculpture. Thankfully, the damage in photos shared from the scene looked relatively contained, and there is no indication the home itself sustained major structural harm.
The pilot, who Texas DPS says was the only person aboard, was taken to the hospital for treatment. As of this writing, the extent of those injuries has not been made public, and authorities have not released the pilot’s identity. No one on the ground appears to have been hurt, which counts as a genuine silver lining given how these situations can go.
A full response team showed up for the incident, including the Fulshear Simonton Fire Department, Community Volunteer Fire Department, Fort Bend County HAZMAT, Texas DPS, the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office, and the local Constable’s Office. That is a lot of flashing lights for one quiet residential street, but when fuel and wreckage are involved, nobody takes chances.
What We Know About the Crash
Fulshear Fire Battalion Chief Ford Stein explained that the plane was leaking fuel, according to ABC 13, and with vapor building up, the last thing anyone wanted was a stray spark turning a bad situation into a genuinely catastrophic one. Crews had to cut power to the home before extraction efforts could safely continue.
It’s the kind of detail that doesn’t make the dramatic photos but is arguably the most important part of the whole response.
Why HAZMAT Gets Called for Plane Crashes
Seeing a hazmat team roll up to a plane crash might raise an eyebrow, but it is fairly standard procedure. Small aircraft carry aviation fuel that can leak on impact, and crews want that contained before it becomes a bigger problem than a dented roof.

Living near a private airstrip has its perks, quick access to your plane being chief among them, but this crash is a good reminder that even short hops carry risk.
