A video shared on TikTok went viral after featuring two guys seemingly attacking a car whose driver had been stealing catalytic converters. I guess this has been a recurring problem in the area because those guys looked like they were really on a mission to catch the thief.

Catalytic converter thefts have been a thorn in drivers’ sides for years, largely because the part contains valuable precious metals like platinum, palladium, and rhodium. Unfortunately, that’s also what makes them such an easy target.

Fortunately for this neighborhood, these vigilantes were paying attention and caught the thief in the act. It doesn’t look like anyone was injured as a result of the incident, but it’s definitely scary nonetheless.

While this video shows what can happen if you fool around, it also serves as a reminder of how easy some thieves to retrieve items and parts from different cars in your neighborhood.

Catalytic Converter Thief Learns the Neighborhood Has a Night Shift

@armandovalencia4 I am writing to bring to your attention a recent incident that took place in our community in Carson, CA. Neighborhood residents observed individuals attempting to steal catalytic converters from multiple vehicles. Thanks to the vigilance of community members, these individuals were caught in the act and reported to local authorities. This serves as a reminder for all of us to be aware of our surroundings and to report any suspicious activities to ensure the safety and security of our neighborhood. #thieves #catalyticconverter #carsontiktok #foryoupage ♬ original sound – user95403890188

The video above looks to be taken from the point of view of a Ring camera on June 30 at roughly 3:30 am. The camera is facing the front driveway of a house, and on the street, you can see a sedan sitting idly in the road.

When reading the caption, it’s broken into two parts, with the first saying, “I am writing to bring to your attention a recent incident that took place in our community in Carson, CA. Neighborhood residents observed individuals attempting to steal catalytic converters from multiple vehicles.”

Suddenly, two people emerge from the house to which the camera belongs and run towards the sedan. One of the people who ran out of the home was carrying what looked to be a bat, which he used to smash the driver’s side of the front windshield.

The driver uses this moment to put the car in reverse. While the suspect does this, you can see another person running beside the car, likely another suspect who needs to be picked up.

To raise additional awareness on the situation, the second part of the caption reads, “Thanks to the vigilance of community members, these individuals were caught in the act and reported to local authorities. This serves as a reminder for all of us to be aware of our surroundings and to report any suspicious activities to ensure the safety and security of our neighborhood.”

Catalytic Converter Thefts Can Take Just Minutes

With nothing more than a battery-powered saw, experienced thieves can crawl underneath a vehicle and remove a catalytic converter in just a couple of minutes before disappearing just as quickly.

Replacing one certainly isn’t cheap, either. Depending on the vehicle, a new catalytic converter can cost anywhere from around $1,000 to several thousand dollars, making the crime far more than just an inconvenience.

While stricter laws and lower precious metal prices have helped reduce thefts in recent years, they still happen often enough that many drivers choose to install protective shields or park in well-lit areas whenever possible.

Commenters Praise the Vigilantes but Warn of the Risks

Commenters were happy that these people were able to enact some kind of revenge on the person stealing catalytic converters, but urged that they use caution. One person wrote, “As a victim of someone stealing my catalytic converter, thank you, but be careful 👏.”

Another person wrote, “Yeah many have gotten themselves killed confronting a cc theft.” Thankfully, it looks like the only damage sustained was to the car of the thieves themselves.

However, because of the quality of the Ring camera, it is hard to see the extent of the damage.  There haven’t been any follow-up videos about the incident, so we do not know exactly what happened afterwards. But I’d like to think that the thief knows not to hit that area again.
