Ford’s best-selling three-row SUV is preparing for another update, and an apparent leaked order guide has already revealed many of the changes coming to the 2027 Explorer. While the next model year does not appear to bring a full redesign, Ford is adding more customization options, fresh appearance packages, and broader engine availability.
The leaked documents surfaced online through a Ford Explorer owners group and were later supported by additional reporting from Ford Authority. Together, they paint a picture of an SUV lineup that is becoming far more flexible depending on how buyers want to spec their Explorer.
One of the biggest developments is the return of Ford’s Panoramic Vista Roof. The power-opening glass roof disappeared for 2026 in favor of a fixed glass panel, but customer demand appears to have convinced Ford to reverse course for 2027.
The update also expands availability of the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6, giving buyers more ways to combine performance and luxury without stepping directly into the sporty ST trim.
Panoramic Vista Roof Makes A Comeback
For 2027, Ford is reportedly bringing back the Panoramic Vista Roof with a power shade across several Explorer trims. Unlike the fixed glass roof used on the 2026 model, this setup includes a moonroof section that can partially open for a more open-air feel.
The feature will only be available on four-wheel-drive models. Buyers of the Active, ST-Line, and Platinum trims can order it as a standalone option, while Tremor and ST models gain access through the new Sun and Sound Package.
That package also bundles in a 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system and multicontour front seats with Active Motion functionality. Ford has not yet revealed pricing for the package or standalone roof option.
More V6 Power For Platinum Buyers

Another major change involves the Platinum trim. Buyers will reportedly be able to upgrade from the standard 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine to the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6 already offered in the Explorer ST.
That engine currently produces 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque. Choosing the V6 package on the Platinum also adds upgraded leather upholstery, special quilting and stitching, quad chrome exhaust tips, and unique 21-inch machined wheels.
Ford appears to be leaning harder into premium performance with the Explorer lineup. The move gives buyers a more luxurious alternative to the ST while still delivering serious power.
New Packages Add More Personality
The leaked order guide also reveals several new option packages for 2027. The most eye-catching is likely the ST Sinister Package, which gives the performance-focused SUV gloss black 21-inch wheels, darkened trim details, amber daytime running lights, and a red ST badge outlined in black.
Ford is also introducing a new Slick Roof Conversion option for Active, ST-Line, ST, and Platinum trims. This removes the roof rails for a cleaner, sleeker look, although buyers lose some cargo-carrying practicality in the process.
A new Ford Security Package is also reportedly on the way. Features include theft alerts, remote vehicle immobilization functions, and stolen vehicle tracking services.
New Colors And Minor Tech Updates

Ford will reportedly introduce Avalanche Gray and Ruby Red Metallic as new exterior color choices for 2027. Meanwhile, Space White Metallic is expected to disappear from the palette.
Smaller updates include the addition of SiriusXM with 360L on some trims and a new illuminated Ford front badge. None of these changes fundamentally alter the Explorer formula, but they should help keep the SUV competitive against newer rivals like the Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade.
The Explorer already remains America’s best-selling three-row SUV despite increasing competition. Ford likely sees these updates as enough to maintain momentum without investing in a more substantial redesign just yet.
