Police in Monona, Wisconsin, were evaded not once, not twice, but three times by the same drunk driver in the early hours of the morning. In the end, she ditched the car and took her chances on foot, parking the getaway vehicle in a rather wet spot.
India D. Cole, 22, of Madison, had been having a night of it in a local bar. According to WMTV 15, the police report states that she had been drinking at a watering hole before grabbing her keys and going for a drive. This is when the trouble started.
Initially, an officer spotted a driver speeding along the beltline. They were showing signs of impairment, swerving and driving erratically. The officer tried to wave them down, but the driver was having none of it. They sped off with a partially covered temporary license, making it impossible to run their plates.
According to the report, they called off the chase due to traffic and other factors not listed. This marked the first escape of the night for this drunk driver.
Another One
The Monona Police Department spotted the same car again 90 minutes later. However, she didn’t stop the first time, and she had no intention of stopping the second, either. Pedal to the metal, she left them in her dust, still speeding.
However, she had made a critical mistake. The road she turned down was a dead end, and there was nowhere to go but Lake Monona, so that’s where she went.
With the car still in gear, she bailed from the moving vehicle, leaving it to roll down the shore and into the water. Here it sat, partially submerged while she escaped again on foot. Hopping through gardens, she disappeared into the night along the shore.
Evidently Guilty
Police headed to the submerged vehicle and dug around for some clue to the owner of the car. Inside, they found an ID, evidence of illegal drug use, and open intoxicants. The ID belonged to the woman driving the car during the high-speed chase.
Cole, who was behind the wheel, has since spoken to the police. She wanted to know about the well-being of her car. She also admitted to being behind the wheel on that night. Moreover, she admitted she had been having a few drinks in a bar beforehand.
As a result of her recklessness, India D. Cole, 22, is wanted for two counts of felony eluding, two counts of second-degree recklessly endangering safety, and multiple traffic offenses. Local police have asked the slippery drunk driver to hand herself in.
