What began as a quiet day in the Maine wilderness turned into a wildlife rescue after a couple spotted a black bear chasing a moose calf. With only seconds to react, the driver made a split-second decision that may have saved the young animal’s life.
According to multiple reports, the couple was driving near Aziscohos Lake in western Maine when they noticed the calf running out of the woods with a black bear close behind. The moose’s mother was nowhere in sight, leaving the young animal with few options as the bear continued its pursuit.
Rather than continue driving, the man steered his pickup truck between the bear and the calf, using the vehicle as a barrier to interrupt the chase. The unexpected move gave the young moose just enough time to escape back into the woods.
The incredible encounter was witnessed by others in the area and has since made headlines across the country, with many praising the couple for thinking quickly during a dangerous situation. Reports of the rescue were shared by the WFMD Radio and other news outlets covering the unusual wildlife encounter.
Bear Chases Moose Calf Toward the Road
The couple had been spending the day kayaking and enjoying the outdoors when they noticed something unusual unfolding nearby.
A young moose suddenly burst from the trees, sprinting toward the roadway with a black bear charging behind it. Realizing the bear was rapidly closing the distance, the driver decided there wasn’t time to wait and see what would happen.
He maneuvered his pickup into the bear’s path, forcing the animal to stop pursuing the calf. “I knew what I had to do,” the driver told reporters after the rescue.
The Truck Became a Life-Saving Barrier
Instead of trying to scare the bear away on foot, the man used the safest tool available—his truck.
By positioning the vehicle between the predator and its prey, he created enough separation for the moose calf to disappear into the surrounding forest. The bear eventually gave up the chase and returned to the woods.
Neither the couple, the bear, nor the moose calf was injured during the encounter.
Wildlife Experts Usually Advise Against Intervening
While the rescue has captured the hearts of animal lovers, wildlife officials generally caution people against stepping into encounters between predators and prey.
Bears can be unpredictable, especially when focused on a meal, and approaching wild animals can place people in serious danger. In most situations, experts recommend observing wildlife from a safe distance and avoiding direct involvement.
In this case, however, the driver acted from inside the protection of his truck and was able to interrupt the chase without leaving the vehicle.
A Rescue Many People Won’t Forget
Videos and photos of the encounter have quickly spread online, with thousands of people applauding the couple for giving the young moose another chance.
Whether the calf reunited with its mother isn’t known, but the driver’s quick thinking and well-timed use of his pickup truck ended the chase with the young moose safely back in the Maine wilderness.

You should not have intervened! It could have caused you to be in danger as well. Also a bear has got to eat, and should have. It was a fair chase until you came along. What if you were hunting and a bear got between you and your future food? How would you feel? Let’s get real…….How do you think the grocery stores get their specialty meats that they sell? In the future, when a wild animal suffers a medical emergency or starvation call a ranger for expert help, otherwise stay out of nature’s business!
